A Guizhou Radio and Television report describes the district as beside the Zhangjiang, reconstructed on the site of the former stone town and combining traditional-style buildings, accommodation, dining and ethnic cultural experiences.

A useful way to visit is to appreciate how the district is designed, seek out local flavours and observe town life, rather than treating every building as part of an ancient town preserved unchanged. The district is in Yuping Subdistrict, with the Zhangjiang as its setting. Official media reports describe traditional-style streetscapes, local food, guesthouses and ethnic cultural displays. Rather than rushing from photograph to photograph, choose a stretch of streets and a place to sit: it is an easier way to enjoy the town's relaxed pace.

Historical reports have mentioned festival or peak-season activities including Buyi singing and dancing and the Yao monkey-drum dance, as well as local food and crafts. Treat them as leads to ask about before departure. Join an activity if it is actually taking place, rather than rearranging the evening around a performance mentioned in an old guide.

Our suggestion is to treat the ancient town as a flexible stretch of leisure time. Late arrivals can check in and deal with luggage before deciding on a walk. After a day at Xiaoqikong, eat first and shorten or extend the stroll according to your energy. These are planning approaches, not fixed visit durations or transport promises.

Choose dinner first, then decide how long to explore

An evening in town can start with dinner. Look at the menu, pricing units and portions before ordering. In a group, agree a budget for the table and keep the main meal, late-night snacks and shopping separate. There is no need to keep buying things just to 'see the whole ancient town'.

When buying local specialities or crafts, ask about materials, origin, price and how to carry them. Buildings, lighting and activities reward a slower look, but past reports of business numbers, busy events or shop lists are not guarantees that those businesses are operating today.
