Discover Maolan: five itineraries from one day to four days and three nights

From the streams at Wuyanqiao to light falling through a cave opening, and on into karst forest. You can enjoy Maolan for a day or stay longer to explore. Start with the level of activity that suits your group, then decide how many days to give the mountains.

Five itineraries: find the one that suits you

Separate the regular waterside sights, caves and forest trek, leaving just one main outdoor activity for each day. Wuyanqiao is an area to consider for a longer stay. Confirm your particular guesthouse location, meals, transport and reception before setting each day’s start and finish.

Published tourism information distinguishes regular sightseeing, the Jiudongtian hike, Funnel Forest and an extreme-activity route. Jiudongtian and Funnel Forest require guides. Public visitor areas do not mean that the entire nature reserve is open for independent exploration.

Route 1 · One-day highlights: make time for the water

For travellers returning to Libo town the same day rather than staying in the mountains. Allow 6–7 hours within the visitor area, plus return transport. With older travellers or children, focus on waterside walks that can be shortened and reduce the number of stops to suit actual walking ability.

Morning · Confirm with your provider whether Ligen Visitor Centre is the entrance for this visit, then travel by vehicle to Wuyanqiao. See the old bridge, then take open paths around Qinglong Pool, Qinglong Ravine and Qinglong Waterfall. Stop for photos and rests; a waterside visit does not automatically permit entering the water.

Afternoon · After lunch, consider a short Jinshi Cave visit if access and fitness allow. Travel by vehicle to a choice of Latan Waterfall, Maolan’s waterside forest (Shuizhonglin), or Crab Gully (Pangxie Gou). Drop a stop if time is short, then meet for your agreed afternoon departure.

  • This route excludes the complete Jiudongtian four-cave traverse and Funnel Forest.
  • Paddleboarding, playing in shallows and stream walking are optional. Confirm permitted areas, water conditions, the operator and flotation equipment first; waterfall plunge pools are not swimming stops.
  • Ask whether a short in-and-out Jinshi Cave visit is possible, and check steps and lighting. Keep to waterside sightseeing if it is unsuitable.

Route 2 · Two days, one night: an unhurried first stay

Our starting suggestion for a first visit without rushing, staying one night around Wuyanqiao. With older travellers or children, default to waterside sights, a village visit and short visits. The complete four-cave route is a separate option, outside the assessment of a relaxed itinerary.

Day 1 · Arrive in the afternoon and explore Wuyanqiao, Qinglong Pool, Qinglong Ravine and Qinglong Waterfall at an easy pace. Choose paddleboarding or stream walking only if the provider and conditions are confirmed as suitable. Return to your guesthouse in the early evening for Maolan farmhouse cooking and time to rest.

Day 2 · Choose a short morning visit to Jinshi Cave, or, following assessment by a professional guide, a traverse through Hei Cave, Shenxian Cave, Jiudongtian and Jinshi Cave. Initially allow 3–4 hours for the full route, adjusting for the actual route and group. Wet cave surfaces and the need for lighting mean that duration alone does not indicate difficulty.

For the relaxed option, spend the second day observing permitted shallows at Crab Gully and strolling around Yaogu Buyi village. After the complete four-cave route, add the village only if energy and return-travel time allow. Confirm reception for old-house visits, batik or cultural activities that day, and respect residents’ wishes about photography.

Route 3 · Two days, one night: a full day for Funnel Forest

For travellers experienced in sustained hiking who want to explore karst woodland. The difference from the relaxed option is that Funnel Forest is the only main activity on day two; do not add the full four-cave route.

Day 1 · Spend the afternoon at Wuyanqiao and the Qinglong waterside paths, with optional water activities subject to confirmed reception. Stay near Wuyanqiao, enjoy local farmhouse food, organise equipment and get an early night.

Day 2 · Set off early with a guide, reserving the day for a Funnel Forest hike provisionally estimated at 6–7 hours. Different starting and finishing points change the distance and duration. Confirm the actual guided route, collection point and estimated exit time. Arrange your return afterwards, without promising an early-afternoon arrival in town.

  • Uneven mountain terrain can be demanding. Wear hiking footwear with good grip and long sleeves and trousers, bring enough water and food, and tell your provider about relevant health conditions.
  • With rain, thunderstorms, accumulated water or access restrictions, switch to a confirmed open sightseeing route or cancel the traverse. Having arrived is not a reason to press on.

Route 4 · Three days, two nights: village, caves and forest

For reasonably fit travellers willing to give caves and a long hike separate days. More days do not automatically mean less effort. For a genuinely slower visit, replace Funnel Forest on day three with village sights, waterside scenery and free time.

Day 1 · Settle in near Wuyanqiao, visit Yaogu village according to local reception arrangements, then see Qinglong Pool and Qinglong Waterfall in the afternoon. Paddleboarding is optional. Enjoy farmhouse cooking in the early evening; night activities depend on conditions and organisation.

Day 2 · Take the confirmed guided Jiudongtian four-cave route in the morning. Prioritise rest in the afternoon. If energy allows, choose a short open section of Huangyang Gully or Crab Gully, without making stream walking a compulsory second outing.

Day 3 · Start early for Funnel Forest. Reserve the whole day for the provisionally estimated 6–7-hour hike and transfers after leaving the forest. Allow ample time before return transport; without enough margin, choose a shorter route or stay an extra night.

Route 5 · Four days, three nights: a tailored karst adventure

For travellers with relevant outdoor experience seeking further cave and rope activities. A specialist provider must confirm available activities, participation requirements and support for day three before the full trip is set. This is not a standard family itinerary.

Day 1 · Stay near Wuyanqiao and enjoy Yaogu village and the Qinglong waterside sights as time allows. Day 2 · Take the guided four-cave outing and rest well in the afternoon. Night observation or stargazing are optional when conditions and organisation allow.

Day 3 · Ask your provider whether Chashan Cave Camp, Chashan Cave, Shuangyan Tiankeng, Tiansheng Bridge and Zhaozidong can be combined. Published information has described extreme activities around Chashan Cave Camp, Shuangyan Tiankeng and Tiansheng Bridge. This does not establish that every proposed location or two separate abseils are currently available. Confirm each location, sequence, activity and access arrangement individually.

Day 4 · If fit and conditions permit, follow your guide’s Funnel Forest plan, reserving the day before travelling back. After a strenuous previous day, substitute rest or a shorter visit rather than forcing consecutive demanding days.

  • Before booking rope activities, check the organiser’s qualifications, instructors, equipment, participation restrictions, applicable insurance and weather-cancellation arrangements. Follow the professionals’ instructions on site.
  • This is not a self-guided abseiling or caving route. If specialist activities are unconfirmed, use day three for confirmed open sightseeing or rest.

Stay around Wuyanqiao and leave room for a mountain evening

Use the Wuyanqiao area as a starting point when comparing accommodation. Check each guesthouse’s room type, meals, parking, hot water and the next day’s meeting point. Sights are dispersed, so self-driving or a pre-arranged vehicle can help connect them. Confirm vehicle entry, parking and pickup arrangements for your visit.

Ask whether a properly organised night-time insect walk is available. Summer fireflies and the night sky depend on season, weather, moon phase and surroundings, and sightings are not guaranteed. The Milky Way and Jiudongtian’s shafts of light are not present on every visit. Stay in permitted areas, minimise light and noise, and do not capture or disturb wildlife.

Before departure, confirm the practical details

Send Gu Ang your travel date, group size, walking ability, preferred route and return time, so the actual provider can check routes, accommodation and transport. These are consultation suggestions; activity prices, equipment and cancellation terms need separate confirmation.

  • Check the areas open that day, the exact entrance and the meeting point. Ligen Visitor Centre is only an entrance candidate to confirm; “Maolan” alone is not a meeting location.
  • Book a local professional guide familiar with the specific four-cave or Funnel Forest route. Do not go alone or enter closed areas. Ask whether guiding, necessary equipment and collection are included.
  • For caves, check whether suitable helmets, headlamps and backup lighting are provided. Bringing your own headlamp does not replace a guide. Prepare hiking shoes, long sleeves and trousers, and appropriate rainwear and warm layers.
  • Confirm permitted water areas and conditions before entering, and use suitable non-slip water footwear. Footwear does not make every water area accessible. Supervise children and keep the option to shorten or cancel.
  • Allow time to leave the forest, retrieve luggage and reach the station. Adjust routes for rain, temporary restrictions or unsuitable physical condition.

Frequently asked questions

Does navigating to “Maolan” identify the visitor entrance?

Confirm the precise meeting point and entrance supplied by your provider, plus drop-off, walking and return arrangements. A destination name or the name of the reserve is not a specific reception point.

Can I explore all the forests, caves and watersides in the reserve?

Do not assume so. Use only areas explicitly open to visitors and suitable for your confirmed arrangements. Closed areas and research or management areas are not destinations for independent exploration.

Which route should I choose with older travellers or children?

Start by comparing the waterside day trip and relaxed two-day option, reducing stops to suit actual walking ability. Assess the complete four-cave route, Funnel Forest and abseiling separately. A longer itinerary is not automatically suitable for every age.

Can I complete the four caves and Funnel Forest in one day?

This plan gives them separate days. Allow an initial 3–4 hours for the caves and 6–7 hours for Funnel Forest as planning estimates, not time guarantees. Routes, weather and group pace change actual duration. Do not combine both just to catch transport.

Are paddleboarding, fireflies or the Milky Way guaranteed?

No. Paddleboarding depends on the actual operator, permitted water area and conditions. Night observation and the sky also depend on season, cloud, moon phase and organisation. Confirm in advance; natural sightings are not promised package features.

Is this Jiudongtian the attraction in Bijie?

No. Here Jiudongtian means a location on the Maolan cave route in Libo. When navigating, booking a guide or meeting up, confirm “Maolan, Libo” and the specific start and finish to avoid confusion with the attraction of the same name in Bijie.
